US-based Sprouters Northwest is recalling 1953 pounds of alfalfa, clover, brocco sandwich sprouts, and spicy sprouts as they may be contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes, according to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

The products subject to recall include Clover Sprouts bearing UPC codes 0 33383 70235 3, 0 79566 12351 5, 8 15098 00201 6;Brocco Sandwich Sprouts with UPC code8 15098 00028 9; Spicy sprouts bearing UPC code 8 15098 00202 3; Alfalfa sprouts bearing UPC codes 8 15098 00108 8 and 8 51042 00402 6; with Best By Date 1/26/2013.

These products were distributed through retail stores and food service distribution chain across Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and British Columbia, Canada.

The company has initiated the recall after the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) identified the presence of Listeria monocytogenes through a surveillance sampling. Sprouters Northwest is monitoring the recall along with WSDA and the FDA.

Consumers are requested not to consume the product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumption of products containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
